Cholesterol Ratio Calculator (Total/HDL, LDL/HDL)
Calculate Total/HDL and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios — stronger CVD predictors than totals.
What this calculates
Cholesterol ratios often predict cardiovascular risk better than individual numbers. Total/HDL is the standard ratio; LDL/HDL is favored in some guidelines. Lower is better — both ratios measure how much 'good' HDL there is relative to other cholesterol.
Formula & how it works
Total/HDL = total cholesterol ÷ HDL. LDL/HDL = LDL ÷ HDL. Triglycerides/HDL also tracked but not computed here.
Worked example
Total 200, HDL 55, LDL 120. Total/HDL = 3.6 (ideal), LDL/HDL = 2.2 (ideal).
Frequently asked questions
Target ratios?
Total/HDL: <3.5 ideal, <5 acceptable, >5 high risk. LDL/HDL: <2.5 ideal, <3.5 acceptable, >3.5 high risk.
Why ratios over totals?
Two people with total 200 differ if one has HDL 35 and the other HDL 70 — the second is much lower risk.
Fasting needed?
For triglycerides yes (12 hr). Total/LDL/HDL can be measured non-fasting with modern panels.
