Blood Pressure Category Classifier (ACC/AHA)
Classify your blood pressure reading per the 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines.
What this calculates
The 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines lowered hypertension thresholds from the older 140/90 standard. This calculator categorizes any reading by current US guidelines: normal, elevated, Stage 1, Stage 2, or hypertensive crisis. Always confirm trends with multiple readings, not a single measurement.
Formula & how it works
Normal: <120 and <80. Elevated: 120-129 and <80. Stage 1: 130-139 or 80-89. Stage 2: ≥140 or ≥90. Crisis: >180 or >120.
Worked example
Reading 135/82 → Stage 1 hypertension (systolic 130-139).
Frequently asked questions
How many readings to confirm?
Two or more elevated readings on separate days, ideally morning and evening, before diagnosing.
White-coat effect?
Real — many people read 10-20 mmHg higher at the doctor. Home cuffs (validated) are more reliable for trend.
When to seek immediate care?
Above 180/120, especially with chest pain, vision changes, headache, or shortness of breath — go to ER.
