What this calculates

A tip calculator does two things: figure out the tip on a restaurant or service bill, and optionally split the total across several people. This calculator handles both and shows you the per-person share rounded to two decimals. Tipping norms vary a lot by country — there's an FAQ below covering the major ones.

Formula & how it works

Tip = bill × tip_percent ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number_of_people. Some people prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal; others tip on the total including tax. Both are common. This calculator uses whatever bill amount you enter — if you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that instead.

Worked example

Bill = $84.50, tip = 18 %, split between 3 people. Tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21. Total = 84.50 + 15.21 = $99.71. Per person = 99.71 ÷ 3 = $33.24. If you'd rather everyone pays a round $34 each, that comes to $102 — an effective 21 % tip on the original bill.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

15–20 % is the modern norm at sit-down restaurants in the United States, calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. Counter service is usually optional or 10 %. Delivery typically expects 15–20 % plus a small extra for distance or weather.

Do you tip in Europe or Asia?

In most of Europe, a service charge is already included; rounding up or leaving 5–10 % for great service is enough. Japan and China traditionally don't tip at all and it can be considered rude. South Korea is similar. Always check the local norm before traveling.

Should I tip on tax?

It's optional. Most etiquette guides say tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Many people just tip on the total because the math is easier. Either is acceptable; the staff will be happy either way.

What's a fair tip for poor service?

10 % is the common 'minimum acceptable' tip if you're unhappy. Below that, most guides recommend speaking to a manager about the issue rather than punishing the server through the tip.
