What this calculates

A salary converter lets you compare jobs and offers across pay structures. An hourly contract role might look cheap next to a salaried job, but once you account for hours per week and weeks worked per year, the picture changes. This calculator handles both directions and lets you set your real working hours, not just the standard 40.

Formula & how it works

Standard assumptions: 52 weeks/year, 40 hours/week = 2,080 hours/year. Hourly to annual: hourly × hours_per_week × 52. Annual to hourly: annual ÷ (hours_per_week × 52). Weekly = annual ÷ 52. Biweekly = annual ÷ 26. Monthly = annual ÷ 12. Real-world adjustments: subtract two weeks PTO + holidays (≈50 working weeks) for a more honest comparison between salaried jobs (paid PTO) and contractors (unpaid PTO).

Worked example

A $35/hour contract at 40 hours/week = 35 × 40 × 52 = $72,800/year. But the contractor takes 3 weeks unpaid PTO + 1 week sick → 48 effective working weeks → $67,200/year. A salaried offer at $70,000/year with 4 weeks PTO is actually slightly more take-home plus paid time off. Always compare effective annual figures including PTO and benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Should I count overtime?

Only if it's reliable and frequent. Overtime as a one-off shouldn't anchor your salary comparison. If you regularly work 50 hours and are paid 1.5× for hours over 40, factor in the extra 10 hours × 1.5 × rate into the annual figure.

How does PTO affect comparisons?

Two weeks of paid PTO at a $50K salaried job is worth about $1,920 in 'extra' compensation that a contractor at the same rate doesn't get. Add the value of PTO and benefits to salaried jobs before comparing to contract rates.

What's the difference between gross and net?

Gross is before taxes. Net is what hits your bank account. Net depends on country, state, filing status, deductions, and pre-tax benefits — way too variable for a simple calculator. Use a country-specific take-home pay calculator for an estimate.

How many hours is full-time?

In the US, federal definition is 30+ hours/week for ACA coverage, but 40 is the cultural norm. The UK and Europe more commonly use 35–38 hours. Many tech companies in the US run on a 40-hour assumption but expect 45–55 in practice — worth asking about explicitly.
