Gravel Calculator (Cubic Yards & Tons)
Calculate gravel volume and tonnage for driveways, patios, and drainage projects.
What this calculates
Gravel is sold by both volume (cubic yards) and weight (tons), and you usually need both: yards for delivery quantity, tons for hauling capacity. Standard depths are 2-3 inches for walkways, 4-6 inches for driveways, and 8-12 inches for heavy-vehicle traffic.
Formula & how it works
Volume (cubic yards) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Tons = cubic yards × density (1.4 tons/yd³ for crushed stone, 1.5 for pea gravel, 1.35 for river rock).
Worked example
Driveway 40 ft × 12 ft × 4 in deep. Volume = 40 × 12 × 4 ÷ 324 = 5.93 yd³. Crushed stone: 5.93 × 1.4 = 8.3 tons.
Frequently asked questions
How deep for a driveway?
4 inches over compacted base for cars, 6+ for trucks and RVs. Add 10-15% extra for settling and waste.
Yards or tons cheaper?
Price varies by region. Tons are easier for trucking math; yards for what fits in your driveway.
Base material first?
Yes — most contractors put down 2-4 inches of crushed concrete or recycled asphalt under decorative gravel for stability.
