Road Trip Time Calculator (with Stops)
Estimate total drive time including fuel, food, and rest stops at any average speed.
What this calculates
GPS apps give you driving time. Reality adds stops. This calculator estimates total trip duration by combining drive time with realistic fuel, food, and rest breaks — useful for planning arrival times on long hauls.
Formula & how it works
Drive hours = distance ÷ avg speed. Fuel stops = floor(drive hours ÷ refuel interval). Total stop time = fuel_stops × stop_minutes + meal_breaks × meal_minutes. Total ETA = drive + stops.
Worked example
600 mi at 65 mph = 9.23 hr driving. 2 fuel stops × 15 min + 1 meal stop × 45 min = 75 min = 1.25 hr. Total: 10.5 hr.
Frequently asked questions
What avg speed to use?
Highway with light traffic: 65-70 mph. Mixed: 55-60. Urban + traffic: 30-45.
Driver fatigue?
Plan 15-min break every 2 hours, longer every 4-5. Solo drivers should cap at 8-9 hours/day for safety.
Border crossings / construction?
Add 30-60 min per crossing, plus contingency for known construction zones.
